Styles of Engagement Rings

When you begin your search for an engagement ring, you may assume you'll find a couple of rings, maybe three, that will suit your tastes. What you may not be ready for is the plethora of styles, from traditional to modern, simple to ornate. There are engagement rings suitable for active lifestyles, and rings that are all about showing off as many diamonds as possible within a one inch diameter.

Be sure to visit one of Robbins Bros.' World's Biggest Engagement Ring Stores to try on all the ring styles that interest you, then narrow down your selection to a few of your favorites. Then you can compare how each ring feels on your finger (you'll wear this 365 days a year for the rest of your life, so comfort is key) and of course, how the ring looks on your left hand.
Solitaire Ring Solitaire – A single diamond set in a plain mounting, usually with four or six prongs. This is a traditional engagement ring, and can be personalized with diamond bands, or a ring guard or wrap (which literally guard or wrap the main ring, and also "frame" the larger diamond to make it more prominent.)
Engagement Ring With Side Stones

Engagement Ring with side stones – This ring has a larger diamond, or center stone, with smaller diamonds on each side.

  • There may be only two side stones
  • You could have micro-pave (tiny) diamonds that encircle the ring.
  • Side stones may consist of three princess-cut diamonds set to look like a heart
  • Baguettes dramatically draw attention to the center stone
  • A wide band sprinkled with melee diamonds acts as a canvas for the larger diamond.
Bridal Set

Bridal Set – This is a traditional engagement ring that fits together with a band, matching the style of the engagement ring. The band is presented at the wedding ceremony, but is purchased with the engagement ring to ensure a perfect match.

Other engagement ring options:
Floating Diamonds

Floating diamonds – Rather than set in prongs, this diamond is set between the metal of the ring, so the diamond appears to be floating. Also called a "tension-set".

Three-Stone Diamond

Three-stone diamond – This is similar to the ring with side stones, but often times the side stones are the same or nearly the same carat weight as the center stone.

  • Each of the three diamonds is the same shape, and you’ll commonly find three-stones with rounds, emeralds, and princess cuts.
  • A favorite at Robbins Bros., World’s Biggest Engagement Ring Store is the oval shape three stone ring.
  • The three stone ring is also known as “Past, Present, Future” – which is symbolic for any couple, but was originally marketed as an anniversary ring.
Bezel Set Bezel-set – The diamond is set in the metal, highlighting the stone but in a way that brings a different type of light than when set in prongs.

Traditional engagement rings can have one of the following looks:

  • Vintage – styles that reflect a past era, commonly Victorian or Roaring 20s/Art Deco
  • Modern – simple styling, very bold, often with a single stone
  • Traditional/Classic – a solitaire or a ring with side diamonds
