Steps to Finding the Perfect Dress

The search for the perfect wedding dress doesn't have to be stressful. It can actually be a fun experience if you follow these words of advice.

  1. First things first, come up with a budget and try to stick to it. You don't want your wedding dress to put a huge dent in your wallet when you've got lots of other wedding expenses to deal with. Come up with a budget, giving yourself a small cushion if the dress you want is slightly over budget.
  2. Invest in a few bridal magazines. You'll never know what styles are out there until you browse through the pages of the latest magazines. You'll also find lots of advertisements for online wedding gown stores and bridal shops near you.
  3. Take notes on the styles that interest you and mark the pages that have promising dresses. Write down the addresses of bridal shops in your area. Friends who've already been through the buying process may also be able to point you to a few boutiques to try.

When you've done the three steps above, ask yourself how much time you have to devote to this search.

You Have 3 Weeks or Less

If you've saved the wedding gown search until the last minute, you'll want something fast. The best place for quick service is the internet. Many online bridal shops will ship your dress to you overnight, and any alterations can be made at your local tailor.

You Have 5 Weeks or Less

You'll want to try the shops that are near you first. If you happen to find a dress in one of these nearby stores, it'll be easier for you to return for fittings. Another option is a department store. Many of them now carry designer bridal wear that is ready to buy right off the rack. All you'll have to do is arrange for a tailor to do any alterations if needed.

You Have More Than 6 Weeks

If you're on a leisurely search for the perfect wedding gown, then you're one of the few lucky brides. With time on your side, you'll be able to take advantage of the local bridal shops as well as those that are farther away. You might even be able to attend a wedding expo that will showcase inspiring bridal attire. If you have the time and the budget, you can always go for a custom-made gown, which usually takes at least 6 weeks to complete.
