Planning a Wedding? Expect Changes to the Plan!
You might have a "Plan B" for rain, but your Plan B won't account for everything. What do you do when your rehearsal is cancelled 10 days before your wedding because your wedding location allowed a film shoot to take place the same day (Only in L.A.!)? Or worse yet, when your reception venue calls just four months prior to say they are doing renovations at the time of your wedding date and would like to give you back your money (And this is a popular, five-star hotel!)? Scary situations but both true stories!
You plan, and prepare, and then plan some more. You can plan all you want, but inevitably, there will be changes to the plan! Sometimes these changes are minute and less impactful. Other times, they can be potentially devastating. Either way, they can catch you off guard and throw a wrench into your well-though out plans. It's moments like this when you take a deep breath, accept what is beyond your control, and change what you can… making the BEST of the situation. Unexpected or last minute challenges can be one more reason to justify having a professional wedding planner at your side to help save frayed nerves and to be able to call upon their experience to turn lemons into lemonade.
In planning my "Superman" wedding for Brandon Routh and Courtney Ford, it was required that I do most of the planning over the phone and via e-mail since the location was two hours away. Of course, I had a few site visits beforehand, including a walk through about two weeks prior to the wedding. At this point, the site was in pristine condition and I was all set with scheduled rental deliveries and detailed floor plans. Yet when I decided to make one last visit with my florist just THREE DAYS before the wedding, I found the site in total disarray. Water was being pumped into a man-made pond which was not pre-existing; a bull dozer and mound of dirt sat atop what used to be the grass ceremony site; and a crew of 30 men working hurriedly to "get the job done". These are the moments in my job that I get to be challenged and stretch myself to become even better! In the end, we slightly altered our "vision", shifted the cocktails from one area to another, adjusted the tent floor plan, and made it work! As guests arrived on the wedding day, the site was breathtaking and no one would know that there was ever a "change" to the original plan!
