Summer in the Sun

It's official... Summer is here! And in Southern California, we have already experienced some record-breaking temperatures. We should all be so thankful to have the beach as a nearby escape from the heat. This temporary reprieve can be a lifesaver; however, it can also be potentially harmful. I experienced this first-hand last weekend. I was at Manhattan Beach enjoying the sun, playing beach volleyball, and cooling off in the ocean... only to come home with a terrible sun burn. Painful? Yes. But also not very attractive! I now have patches of skin ranging from three or four different colors and I'm expecting the peeling to start any day now.

Note to self: when you plan to be in the sun for hours, reapply the sunscreen!

Note to Brides: if you are a Summer Bride, please be careful in those last weeks leading up to your wedding. I know you want to be tan. I know you want to clean up messy tan lines from past bathing suits. But remember: it only takes one little slip-up to be zapped by those harmful rays! As a result, you look like a lobster on your wedding day OR you could have skin flaking on to your groom's tuxedo OR your beautiful strapless gown could reveal some not-so-pretty "blotchy" skin like I now have.

You want to use the same precaution with tanning beds. It only takes an extra minute or two in the tanning bed to burn your skin. If you have never self-tanned, I don't recommend trying it for the first time in the last month before your wedding. Whether it's a tanning bed or a spray tan, you never know how your skin could react and this is not the time to take risks.
