Top Off Your Cake with Class!

Looking for unique ideas to top off your wedding cake?

You've probably seen the old family wedding photos with a plastic bride and groom on top of the traditional white wedding cake. Well, it's a new century and it's okay to show the world who you really are!

You may have agreed with your mother on the church, and your sister on the dress. The future mother-in-law talked you into having the reception at the country club, too. But stand up for the cake and cake top you and your groom want, even if it's a red-velvet cake with a chocolate heart mold on the top tier.

Couples have recently opted for the following delectable choices:

  • Celebration of Citrus: yellow cake, flavored with lemon and vanilla bean frosted with buttercream, then decorated with candied naval oranges, baby mandarins and kumquats.
  • Forget the tiers and build a mountain out of the cakes, with a frosting covering that resembles snow. Bride and groom can be placed on skis at the top, with chocolate "trees" planted down the hill.
  • Turn your cake into an underwater exploration. Your cake designer can create edible starfish, shells, and fish, then top the cake with a bowl containing two fish.
  • Tiers can be square-shaped and decorated as presents, with a chocolate "card" on top that announces the new "Mr. & Mrs."
  • Couples who've fallen in love at Disneyland may opt for a colorful caked with Mickey & Minnie on the top tier.
  • One recently popular style of wedding cake is a cupcake display. It's usually an assortment of pretty cupcakes that are layered in tiers so guests can serve themselves if they'd like.

Of course, if you're into everything vintage, you can always go with the traditional white cake and borrow the plastic bride and groom from your mom....
